The holiday season is right around the corner. It’s arrival hearkens the presence of comfort and joy within your home because friends and family will be coming to call. Lack of interior space during the holidays can sometimes make hosting holiday celebrations a little less comfortable and less joyful for you and your guests. Archadeck of Austin has the perfect solution to your holiday house woes by the addition of an outdoor space to your backyard. Outdoor structures are less invasive and most of the time cost only a fraction of what an interior room addition can cost. The good news is in our mild Austin climate, outdoor structures can bring added functional space for the holidays and give your more room to spread out, relax and enjoy the season.
There are many benefits to adding an outdoor space to your backyard. The upcoming season makes the perfect reason to go ahead with those plans on your wish list. The beauty of choosing to build now is that it will not only provide you with a space you can enjoy in time for the holidays, it will provide you with an area that you can utilize the whole year through. Here are just a few of the rewards you will reap by the addition an outdoor structure.
The more the merrier
Having more space is always a plus. More space is especially important when entertaining. Moving the party outdoors can open up more space for dining and seating, or both. Everyone is more at ease and jovial when they have plenty of room to relax and enjoy the moment instead of having to worry about space confines. Can you imagine having the ability to take your Christmas party to the covered porch or deck and have plenty of room to dine and exchange presents without space constraints? Texans are fortunate enough to be able to move the festivities outdoors on a whim due to the warm climate. We deliver you a functional space to pull off any shin-dig at a moments notice. This is what outdoor living in Texas is all about.
Master the art of multi-tasking
Some outdoor areas will also give you the benefit of being able to multi-task. This involves an outdoor space that serves more than one purpose. One of the most efficient uses of outdoor space includes an outdoor kitchen. Having the luxury of an outdoor kitchen can take the load off your interior kitchen during a holiday dinner, or large event. Today’s outdoor kitchens can be outfitted with everything from warming drawers to smokers. When it comes to the choices available for your outdoor kitchen the possibilities are endless. With outdoor living combination that includes an outdoor kitchen you are destined to become the master of multi-tasking in your outdoor domain. We can custom design your space to include serving and bar areas for added seating and dining space where you need it. I have always heard that the kitchen is the heart of the home, this saying holds true for an outdoor kitchen as well.
Set the mood
Can you imagine the scene; you and your guests are gathered by the fire on Christmas Eve to exchange gifts, relax and just enjoy each other’s company? The kids may even be busy preparing gooey sweet s’mores over the open flame. This is all possible by adding an elegant outdoor fireplace or fire pit to your outdoor space design. The soothing sounds and warmth of a fire can be yours anytime you like. Outdoor fire features help set the mood and create ambiance in any setting.
Festive and fun
You may not realize the holiday decorating opportunities that arise by adding an outdoor structure to your backyard. Many types of structures can be decorated with lights, garland and wreaths in honor of the season. Pergolas make the perfect spot to hang holiday lighting, as do gazebos. These graceful outdoor designs come alive with enchantment when decked out for the holidays. Decks, screened porches and other outdoor rooms also make the perfect place to trim a tree. Even the mantel of your outdoor fireplace can become a place to add festive touches.
These are just a few of the many benefits you can take advantage of by adding an outdoor structure. Along with beauty, they will heighten function immeasurably. It may even make you wonder why you’ve waited so long to take the leap into outdoor living bliss!

An Austin screened porch will keep the mosquitoes away and enable you to enjoy outdoor living bug free
We cannot ignore the mosquito problems facing Texas this season. This year has been the worst on record for West Nile virus cases on record for Texas. Mosquitoes have frightened us off our patios and decks and made us retreat indoors for fear of contracting West Nile Virus. I am certain many outdoor entertaining endeavors have been put on hold, and many barbecues cut short because of the mosquito. Archadeck of Austin has the perfect cure for your outdoor living mosquito induced blues; a screened porch addition to enhance your home and other outdoor living structures.
According to a recent article by The Huffington Post Texas has recorded at least 510 cases of neuroinvasive West Nile, considered the most serious form of the illness because it affects the nervous system, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Having a screened porch to escape from the dangers of mosquitoes will not only enable you to continue to enjoy Texas outdoor living, but it will aid in reducing your risk of coming into contact with a mosquito that could be carrying West Nile Virus.
Screened porches give you the freedom and beauty of outdoor living without having to deal with the threat of bothersome insects, including mosquitoes. I guess you could call the screen porch another method of mosquito prevention because the presence of screen puts a barrier between you and the hungry bugs. Screen porches also provide protection from inclement weather such as wind, and rain.
A screen porch can be used in conjunction with a deck or patio as a focal point of an outdoor living structure combination, or can be added to your home to serve as an outdoor living room. Our screen porch designs offer plenty of functionality, from the inclusion of custom outdoor fireplaces, ceiling fans and other creature comforts. We can even construct a custom spot to mount an outdoor TV, just in time for football season. When it comes to the many benefits and inclusions a screened porch can add to your lifestyle, the world is your oyster.

Do you remember way back when the covered patio was referred to as a veranda? The actual definition of a veranda is a roofed opened gallery or porch, alas, today’s covered patio. I remember the first time I heard the term veranda; it was in one of those old films that draws you in like Key Largo, with Bogart and Bacall. The name itself lures you in like a moth to a flame and leaves you ready to escape to your own private paradise where relaxation is the focus. Nothing much has changed since a covered patio was called a veranda. Homeowners still adore the idea of escaping to the outdoors for a memorable moment with their families, or an opportunity to break bread and swap stories with dear friends.
Covered patios are also referred to as patio covers, cabanas, covered porches and outdoor living rooms. The concept is one and the same and depending on the region you hail from can depend on how these structures are described. It is like the infamous lyrics of Louis Armstrong; you like potato and I like potahto. No matter what label you put on it, it is still a potato! No matter what you call it, the covered patio is best known for one variable; outdoor living enjoyment which is the reason for its timeless appeal.
The top 5 things to make you fall in love with the covered patio
1) Protection- covered structures offer something a simple deck cannot, protection from the elements. Having the luxury of a covered patio will enable you to continue that outdoor celebration in spite of rain. Covered patios are a refuge from the wrath that Mother Nature can unleash at the most inopportune times. If mosquitoes are a problem you can add mosquito curtains to your covered patio. Mosquito curtains work great, and are easy to maintain season to season. When the curtains are not in use they can be drawn back to flank the edges of your patio cover and add a romantic, breezy look to your space.
2) Shade – no matter how much you love the outdoors, here in Texas things can get rather steamy. Instead of retreating into your home, covered patios provide a sun-safe spot from the dangerous UV rays of the sun. By adding a ceiling fan or two on the interior of your covered porch you will also provide a cool spot to lounge away the dog days of summer in comfort.
3) Functionality- a covered patio adds space for entertaining, dining and even cooking. One popular option among homeowners is to include an outdoor kitchen in the design of their patio cover so everything is close at hand when cooking for a crowd or just the two of you. Patio covers can be equipped with amenities that give homeowners the freedom to use their space as an outdoor room.
4) Value – not only does a covered patio improve the aesthetics of your home and landscape as a whole, outdoor living structures have a high ROI (return on investment) if you are looking to sell your home in the future. Prospective buyers love homes that have outdoor room areas that can be used in the same way an interior room can. A covered patio can add monetary value to your home and also add value to your lifestyle.
5) Beauty- no one can deny the beauty of a well-designed and well-built covered patio. By using your materials choices to accentuate your home as well as your landscape, the covered patio can stand as a work of art in the backyard and a focal point to play other features off of. The covered patio will help you gain focus over the way you view your entire backyard. Mixing rich wood tones with stone accents is just one example of enhancing the texture and focus of your outdoor living space.
No matter what you call a covered patio space, the outcome is the same; covered patios offer outdoor living at its best. Next time you are scrolling through your TV to find something to watch and you run across one of those classic flicks that refers to the veranda as an outdoor oasis…. you will know exactly what they mean.

When you think of a covered patio design often times your mind will automatically picture a square structure under a hip roof. The fact of the matter is that our covered patio designs don’t fall into a generic, cookie cutter style. Many times your ideal design and roof type can be something quite different and unique. When we design an outdoor structure area that is connected to, or in close proximity to you existing home we consider all the factors that keep the design original to your home’s materials and structural details.
We recently completed a project in Austin that takes the covered patio to a whole new level. This covered patio includes an outdoor kitchen, an outdoor fireplace and abundant space all under an octagonal roof design. This type of roof is often used when building gazebos and when used as a covered patio roof delivers dramatic beauty evident from the backyard as you look up to the structure and on the interior on the structure as you look at the interior ceiling of the patio. We also used a king-truss which spans the width of the patio and serves as much for aesthetic appeal as for support. The result is stunning.
Not only does this covered patio feature a unique roofline, it is also packed with every luxurious amenity that you can get in a covered patio design. We detailed the extensive use of high-quality materials in our last post by Archadeck of Austin, the materials combined with the space this area offers the homeowners takes an otherwise vacant space and creates the feel of an outdoor family room. The brick and white limestone fireplace expanses plenty of room for comfortable outdoor furnishings to surround it so this family can curl up by the fire any day of the week. Above the fireplaces’ mantel we pre-wired the conduit through the fireplace so no wiring is visible to the naked eye for the homeowners to mount their flat-screen TV. The large gourmet outdoor kitchen gives them the freedom to leave their indoor kitchen any time they like and prepare and dine together outside on their new covered patio. We included plenty of lighting and ceiling fans in the design to make sure no creature comfort was left behind. The space also offers endless entertaining possibilities because of the amenities and spacious square footage contained under roof.
From the backyard the covered patio is a design masterpiece, from the custom iron staircase that spills gracefully into the beautifully landscaped backyard to the stucco finished skirting used around the base of the covered patio to give it a finished look that ties it into the existing home perfectly. The image that comes to mind when I see the completed project is a photographer searching for the “best angle” to photograph a shot of his subject. This covered patio is full of angles and it looks beautiful from every one of them. This space delivers everything you would want in a covered patio design; harmony, functionality, cohesive tie-in to the existing home and it also increases the value of the existing home with the added outdoor living space.

Archadeck of Austin works with architectural challenges to deliver a stunning L-shaped covered patio
These Cedar Park, TX homeowners contacted us to construct a covered patio for their two-story home. The house is flat on the backside with lots of windows and their landscape architect had already completed some significant rounded rear patios that we were to incorporate into the design. The project was not without its challenges, but we were able to come up with the perfect complement to the existing home and structures.
We initially experienced some issues with the covered patio because the home’s upper windows and large nearby tree were constricting to the allowable height of the area where the covered patio was to be placed. The homeowners wanted a closed wall where a TV could be mounted as well as a full option outdoor kitchen and a dining room area. We were at odds with the interaction of the room facilitated with the height limitations, the existing bay window over the kitchen and the roof pitch.
We came up with a design that includes a lower and shallower roof pitch to compensate for the 2nd story windows and make the design cohesive. We also extended the area further on the right than the left, so the patio would still fit the guidelines of the rounded patio floors already constructed. We added structural supports in prime locations and used larger than normal beams to accommodate the extended span. To make the two roofs we built work together we used a cathedral ceiling on one side and a flat ceiling on the other.
The finished project includes a gorgeous stone bar which was designed to coordinate with the circular lines and add enough space so you can view the TV from any angle. The prime location of the bar area allows flow from the outdoor kitchen, and dining areas as well as access to the TV. In many cases it is difficult to decide where the bar stools should be placed in projects like this because you want a significant enough area to take in all the function and beauty of the entire structure and also allow for proper furniture placement and “pull-out” room as well. We used similar materials to finish the patio that were conducive to the integrity of the existing home. We used complimentary stone on the front of the kitchen and integrated unique stone and tile inserts into the counter tops. The outdoor kitchen includes a propane grill and side burner, refrigerator, storage and plenty of electrical outlets. The finished project created an outdoor oasis that adds value to the home and the homeowners lifestyle.
If you are thinking about creating an outdoor oasis in your backyard, contact Archadeck of Austin to make it happen. This is the season to enjoy the great outdoors and all it has to offer, family, friends, fun and your own little slice of paradise right outside your back door.

Are you tired of the hot Texas sun beating down on you the entire season while trying to enjoy your deck? If so, we have the answer to your woes. We can, in many cases, turn your existing deck into a haven of shade and comfort by adding a roof and making it into an open porch or screened porch. Covered decks are the savvy way to enhance your existing backyard. We will inspect your existing deck to see if it can accommodate the addition of a roof. Often times we can reinforce the foundation enough to support a roof.
Open and covered porch transformations are a great way to add beauty and enjoyment to your landscape, and can also function as an outdoor room. Screened porches give you all the benefits of an open porch, but with added protection from the insects. Both structures are a viable option as long as your deck can accommodate the added weight. We can evaluate your existing deck to see if it fits the bill, and can often offer reinforcement to the structural components within your deck to ensure strength and structural compatibility with adding a roof.
Your new porch can be equipped with finishing touches such as lighting, ceiling fans, or even an area reserved for that glorious flat screen TV. The beauty of having a screened or open porch design is that is no limit to the interior reveals that can be brought into the mix. We often use bead board ceilings, rustic beams and recessed lighting in many of our screen porch designs. How ornate or rustic you make your space is all up to you.
If you are considering “putting a lid” on the hot sun this season by adding a roof to your deck, contact Archadeck of Austin, we can open up a new world of backyard opportunities for you and your family this summer. Call for a free consultation: (512) 259 – 8282 Austin@archadeck.net
Have you ever looked at your home and wished you could purchase adjoining acreage just to add on a playroom, living room other space to your existing home? Why not think about your ideal living space in a broader sense. The fact is there is a plethora of living enjoyment area right outside your back door that can be utilized more efficiently than an interior addition.
Living space doesn’t necessarily have to mean “interior” living space. There are a multitude of outdoor living structures that lend themselves to dining, entertaining, relaxing, and play. Today’s outdoor structure designs can be outfitted with all the same amenities an interior addition to your home can offer, and in some cases even more. Here are some ideas that will inspire you…
The covered patio or porch
Covered patios keep you cool on hot days, and offer protection from the elements as well. They can be constructed from a vast array of materials such as wood, brick, stone and other hardscape material. Covered patios can be attached to your home or your deck, or can even be used as a freestanding structure within the landscape. Covered patios can also be situated beside your pool for a cabana style covered patio. Covered patios can be wired to accommodate ceilings fans, sound systems, computers, telephone, and even flat screen TV’s. Patio covers can include built-in fireplaces and even contain fully functional outdoor kitchens with all the fixings. These include refrigeration, sinks, food preparation areas, warming drawers, microwave, smokers, and grills. You name it, we can include it into the design of your patio cover. If you are looking for the perfect place to watch the game, and prepare a feast for your guests all while watching the kids play, the covered patio is an all-around best outdoor structure. An outdoor living room with mother nature as the backdrop.
The screen porch
The screened porch is another way to utilize all the amenities of an outdoor living room, minus the insects. Here in Texas, the warm temperatures will give you the benefit of year-round enjoyment of your screen porch. We also refer to these as sun porches and they make a perfect spot to relax and rewind. The beauty of a screened porch is that you get the pleasure of the outdoors without actually being outdoors. A screen porch offers an extension of outdoor as well as indoor living space.
Multi-structure outdoors living areas
We are starting to see a trend in multi-structure outdoor living areas. These are outdoor living areas that contain the works. These can include open patios, outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, pergolas, outdoor kitchens and decks all in one. This offers homeowners the ultimate in luxury and convenience, not to mention adding to your home’s value. Our multi-structure designs are planned to compliment each structure as it flows together. Instead of getting an outdoor room, you are actually getting an outdoor paradise where each outdoor room or area caters to a specific function but also harmonizes with the other elements within the entire design. Imagine having an area right outside your back door where you can dine, cook, read a book, roast marshmallows, listen to the crackle of the fire on those cool Texas nights, entertain, or just enjoy the fresh air.

Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen a huge rise in the number of people looking for covered patios. But, today’s covered patios are nothing like the ones of old. Today’s patios are an outdoor room fully furnished with love seats, huge comfy chairs, outdoor rugs that look like indoors, fireplaces, outdoor televisions and all the accoutrements of an outdoor kitchen. The great thing is each covered patio is different. The fun part is deciding what custom elements to put into each covered patio.
Here’s how we start? We start with these 3 answers:
- What is the most important thing you want to do in your outdoor room?
- What are another 5 or 10 things you want to do in that room?
- Are there times you want to entertain other people in the covered patio? How often? How many people? What activities?
Question 1: What is the most important thing you want to do in your outdoor room?
Often we start by thinking about where our room will be located in our yard or how we’re going to furnish it. While this is incredibly important, the answers to those questions should be derived from how you want to live in your room. Do you want to spend weekend afternoons out there watching football with good friends and having a place to warm snacks and keep drinks cold right at your fingertips? Or, do you want to spend chilly nights in your outdoor room reading books and snuggling near the fire? In short, what is the top thing you want to do in your room?
Question 2: What are another 5 or 10 things you want to do in your new covered patio?
Question 2 is very important because it will drive what features, how large, and other details about your room such as whether it will be completely open or have 1-3 closed walls.
Question 3: What about entertaining other people?
Do you host the family reunion every year? Do you host poker night or book club night or other important gatherings on a fairly regular basis? You might want to consider these when designing your room.
When we say designing, you don’t need to do the architectural designing or any other up-front design. You simply tell us what you want and together we work to come up with a structural design that works for you. We review it together and make sure it’s exactly what you want before we start the job.
Then you can do the fun designing – the interior design of your exterior room!!

This Austin patio cover features a custom stone outdoor fireplace and much more to soothe your senses, and your soul
Having an outdoor structure that functions as an outdoor living and gathering area opens up a whole new world of lifestyle possibilities. Being able to extend entertaining space from the interior of your home outdoors not only makes things run a little bit smoother when entertaining family and friends. It can also become a place that offers intimacy and refuge from a hard day. That is exactly the type of structure Archadeck of Austin built for these Austin, TX homeowners. This design incorporates a stunning covered patio which also contain an outdoor fireplace, a custom stone outdoor kitchen, stone benches and a stone surround that runs the entire perimeter of the structure that also serves as a hardscaped flower bed.
The covered patio was designed in the spot where we removed an old sunroom. After removing the sunroom we extended the roof to accommodate the new covered patio. The patio floor is finished with stain and seal concrete to compliment the gorgeous custom stonework that was used throughout the entire structure. Some of the key areas where we used Leuders stone include the outdoor kitchen, the flower bed surround, the stone benches as well as the bench toppers and of course the mesmerizing multi-tiered outdoor fireplace. Within the interior of the patio cover we used a tongue and groove cedar ceiling to add some rustic flair to compliment the natural characteristics that are evident in the usage of the stone and concrete. We also stripped and stained the homeowners existing deck in order to match the hues found within the covered patio. The use of colors, textures and design lines throughout the patio make it truly breathtaking. The talented homeowners also finished the interior of the patio in expert style, with well-appointed patio furnishings and well blended accessories that tie the whole project together perfectly.
The focal point within the porch cover is undoubtedly the elegant multi tiered custom stone fireplace. The homeowners took a unique approach to the popular practice of utilizing a TV above an outdoor fireplace. Many homeowners opt to construct a recessed perimeter to house their TV, such as a flat screen, for permanent placement. These Austin, TX homeowners did not wish to keep their TV above the outdoor fireplace permanently, so we designed the fireplace using multi-tiered custom stone ledges with a customized pull out shelf on the fireplace’s mantle that is outfitted with a cable and electrical outlets. This shelf makes it easy to place the TV on the outdoor fireplace whenever they wish, and when the TV is not in use, the shelf can be pushed in and hidden and no one is none the wiser. This feature is an example of this structural convenience that is built into every inch of this outdoor structure. Archadeck of Austin also made certain to add plenty of outlets into the columns used on the patio cover, to add more convenience as well.
The expert stone work on this structure was achieved using select Antique Leuder’s stone, which is an upgrade from limestone. The use of this stone can be seen in the bench toppers, the outdoor kitchen, the stone benches under the roof cover and many other areas throughout this outdoor oasis. To create an essence of ambiance, Archadeck of Austin made sure to include outdoor lighting throughout the patio cover. The creative placement of a large amount of low voltage lighting around the entire perimeter adds to the “feel” of relaxation and refuge. Low voltage lighting was placed strategically within the stone benches, surrounding the open area we built to showcase a water feature, and we added recessed LED lights in the existing decks as well.
These Austin, TX homeowners are now sittin’ pretty in this breathtaking covered patio, that is full of amenities to refresh their senses and their soul. A multi-functional outdoor structure design such as this could not be accomplished without having a project manager to contact at any time which always plays a positive role in seeing a structure to fruition. Our expert project managers are a big bonus for going with us. To learn more about our stunning outdoor living designs, contact Archadeck of Austin today.

We don’t just build structures to fit the way you want to live, we build structures that support the big moments in your life.
When you think about what motivates homeowners to make the decision to add an outdoor living area to their home and backyard, in many cases the motivating factor that drives them to act upon their decision is a holiday, party or event they have planned for the near future. Let’s say for instance with the holiday season just around the corner, a homeowner may decide to go ahead and add on that new deck, covered porch, or outdoor fireplace with a custom stone patio surround in anticipation of family and friends that are planning to visit and having the structure up and running will create a great place to relax and spend time with family and friends within a unique outdoor setting to make new memories together. It’s almost as though you have the indulgence of an extra “family room” with a unique outdoor setting. Could you imagine having an outdoor kitchen incorporated into your deck or patio that could serve as a secondary food preparation area on Thanksgiving? The hubby can fry the turkey in the outdoor kitchen, and be out of the way, while the lady of the house prepares all the sumptuous side dishes in the house. Having the function of an outdoor kitchen to take some of the stress out of the kitchen, especially if you prepare Thanksgiving dinner for a large crowd, can make “Turkey day” run as smooth as a french silk pie.
The beauty of our business is when a homeowner approaches us and needs their outdoor endeavor completed within a specific time frame most of the time we are able to accommodate their request. We do absolutely everything we can to accommodate it. We always quote a lead time to begin and give an expected completion date and 90% of the time we meet it with 2 or 3 days. Just this month we had a deck that was needed for a wedding, a restaurant deck for an opening last week, and a cabana finished for a party. This week we engaged on a job for a Christmas party mid December. In most cases, if you need it, Archadeck of Austin can have it ready for you within the time frame you need it.
Many outdoor structure builders hesitate to make these kind of promises to homeowners because they lack the project management that is necessary to make sure every aspect of your outdoor structure is run in a professional, timely manner. We make certain on all of our jobs that each specific layer of the building process is set up in the order it needs to be accomplished to avoid delays, and have wiggle room if a problem arises. The keys to being able to deliver what we promise are superior project management, frequent and effective communication with the homeowner, a solid design, and good weather.
Wouldn’t the thought of having your New Year’s Eve bash under the cover of the warm Texas evening on your new deck sound enticing this year? If you dream it, we can build it. The bottom line is that if you need to get a job done to fit your individual schedule we can do it. Contact Archadeck of Austin to learn more and remember, we take care of everything but the weather. Some outdoor structure designs flow into their intended surroundings effortlessly, without any effort and appear like they were always meant to be. Other designs however, create more of a challenge to appear easy and original to their surroundings. As a seasoned outdoor structure builder I set the bar high. I like for my structures to look as though they belong with the existing home and it’s surroundings. Sometimes in order to do something creative it takes more of a professional eye in order to overcome unanticipated obstacles that may present themselves. At this home in the Steiner Ranch community, we ran into one such obstacle and we were able to come up with a simple solution to a somewhat complex challenge.
When we met with the Steiner Ranch homeowners they wanted to add an aesthetically pleasing and weather friendly area to their existing concrete slab patio . Their wish was to transform their slab concrete patio into an outdoor area they and their family could use to relax and entertain. The space intended for the proposed patio cover contained a bay window which created a structural challenge to overcome. The bay window and the area surrounding the bay window left no obvious place to attach the covered patio. Our goal was to attach the roof of the structure at the easiest place on the house that would stay true to the homes structural integrity. Thus, we extended the kitchen window out and put a gable roof over the top. We then used a standard gable extension off the roof to attach the covered patio in it’s destined location.
We used mixed mediums of beautiful, rich cedar along with aluminum for the railing. We were able to construct a patio cover for these Steiner Ranch homeowners using the elevation of the original existing concrete patio, which not only keeps the homes originality intact it creates good movement on the covered patio as well. The homeowners are ecstatic about their new outdoor living space, now it has become a treasured space to spend time together.
Contact Archadeck of Austin to design your perfect outdoor structure. We can create a unique resolve to your structural obstacles delivering to you an outdoor structure that fits your home and your lifestyle.

Being able to incorporate an outdoor living structures within this backyard could seem like a challenge to some, but not to us. The mingling of the wood and flagstone we used to create this outdoor retreat is mesmerizing set against the beauty of the rush of green in this residence.
These homeowners had an existing concrete patio that was not serving their needs. Our goal was to extend the patio and pour a whole new facet of enjoyment into their backyard. Our design included a covered patio extension complete with an outdoor kitchen and pergola-style roof and another patio that descends from the covered patio to the new outdoor fireplace.
In designing the master plan to transform this Round Rock, TX backyard into a paradise for the senses we first had to overcome some obstacles. The first challenge was to incorporate all the desired structures into the homeowners minimal backyard and also deal with the small elevated back porch. The design we decided upon that would work best was to actually create two structures out of one area by extending the small space to make it larger and adding another space to serve as the focal point for the outdoor fireplace.
We designed an extension of the existing concrete patio and added stone over the top of the concrete for seamless design. We then added the pergola with an extension as well over the patio and added a little slope to compensate for the existing patio being so high. The small round patio located in the design accents the large outdoor fireplace located at the corner. We used a round design for the patio and continued the curved design feature into the fireplace’s eyebrow and hearth.
The medium we chose to cover the patios with is gorgeous Oklahoma flagstone in buff peach. We also used block stone in the design using Autumn blend block stone. The element of the two separate stones working together along with the cedar pergola and the trees on the property is truly breathtaking.
The outdoor kitchen is located inside the patio cover and includes a grill, refrigerator and plenty of electrical outlets. The countertops are finished out with a very nice tile that compliments the homes brick colors. The rustic outdoor fireplace is graciously equipped with custom cedar cabinets above the firebox made especially for housing a television and keeping it safe and dry from the elements.
These Round Rock, TX homeowners couldn’t be more thrilled with the transformation, they say it feels as though they have a whole new backyard. We can create a stunning transformation of your back yard as well, contact Archadeck of Austin to learn more (512) 259 – 8282

Ever heard the old phrase “to have your cake and eat it too”? Well, that is exactly what this Austin, TX homeowner was able to do thanks to Archadeck of Austin. The homeowner came to us with the desire to add an attached covered structure to his lovely residence, unfortunately the exterior architectural details of his home made this impossible based on the elevation of the windows, walls and points of attachment on the home. This dilemma presented us with one of those situations where you look at the glass as half-full as opposed to half-empty, in doing this we were able to design a simply stunning detached patio cover that turned out to be more than the homeowner ever imagined in terms of function, beauty and style.
We built a free-standing covered patio over a stained concrete patio with a roomy outdoor kitchen. The material we chose to use on the patio cover is a wonderfully rustic western red cedar with a tongue-and-groove cedar ceiling. The rich hues of the wood play off the beauty of the patio floor beautifully. For added drama we used an open cathedral ceiling with a standard ridge beam and left the gable open with decorative Y bracing. We finished out the patio cover with electrical outlets for all the little creature comforts and ceiling fans for those balmy Texas days. The patio cover spans a lofty 12 X 18 and careful consideration was taken to ensure the structural integrity of the structure over this large span. Many builders would not have the expertise of know-how to ensure the strength of a structure with a span of this size, but Archadeck’s national design team along with all our locations nationwide work to ensure the structural integrity of each and every structure we build. Archadeck of Austin is an experienced builder who knows exactly how to accomadate any changes or fluctuations within the structure that are sometimes unforeseen until construction is underway.
The stain and score concrete patio plays off the beauty of the patio cover. Archadeck of Austin installs a great number of these stain and score patios, they are really nice and add character to the concrete and gives it a very nice finish. Stain and score is a less expensive way to get the look you are aiming for with todays homeowner taking the rustic, or old world route in terms of design. The misconception of these floors is that they will eventually crack, this is certainly not the case with every concrete patio. Archadeck of Austin entails the correct expansion techniques when installing concrete patios and uses the standards set forth by the American Concrete Association. The key is the strength of the concrete as well as the reinforcement and joints needs to be correct in order to reduce your chances of cracking. Changes in moisture and temperature can cause the concrete to expand and contract to give way to cracking, careful planning and placement of the joints will reduce the chances of this occuring. The main thing that attracts most homeowners to stain and stamp concrete is its beautifully smooth finish. We can apply a finish coat to the completed patio floor to gain some traction to prevent slippage and falls.
Even when we are faced with an obstacle that in the case with other builders would be cause to become disheartened, Archadeck of Austin comes up with a masterful plan that creates and amplifies the excitement the homeower feels in anticipation of building and completing their outdoor structure. This is a another case where you get your cake, and get to eat it ( and enjoy it) too.
If you are dreaming of an outdoor structure but don’t feel confident that what you have in mind would work in your particular circumstance, whether it is a issue of limited space, or it seems architecturally improbable, contact Archadeck of Austin, we can create an outdoor space that will end up being more than you could have ever imagined.

This outdoor living space packs in as much of the “living” part of outdoor living as you can get. Once this structure is completed the homeowners will have plenty of room to entertain in their new outdoor living room, as well as provide a special place for an evening at home. This structure will have it all. It is being built with an outdoor fireplace, and an outdoor kitchen which will be equipped with a Big Green Egg smoker, the patio will also have an area above the fireplace that awaits the installation of the homeowners big HDTV over the fireplace. It doesn’t get any better than this.
Since the detached patio sits in close proximity to the homeowners pool, we are using a CoolDeck concrete floor in the detached patio that matches the surround of the pool itself. The large beams that support the detached patio are housed in beautiful columns that encompass a continuation of the stone with a knee-wall height ledge/border that runs the entire perimeter of the structure. The outdoor fireplace is also finished in stone as well. The combination of the wood and the stone is going to make a stunning ,unique and rustic looking retreat once completed. This structure will be a great place to get away from the stresses and worries of work and obligations, a place to just relax in beauty and relaxation.
The outdoor kitchen is being equipped with all the accoutrements to make the kitchen fully functional on it’s own. The kitchen will have a Big Green Egg smoker, a grill, a side burner, ice maker, refrigerator and a kegerator. Imagine watching the big game on Sunday with the guys in all this convenience and luxury, i can see this outdoor room quickly becoming the “place to be” each weekend.
Did i mention the Big Green Egg? Even though the name makes you imagine the famous children’s author, Dr, Seuss, there are no “green eggs and ham” cooking up in this wonderful smoker. Big Green Egg smokers have become all the rage in outdoor structures and among those that like to grill out in style. These smokers and grills are considered to be one of the worlds best. These smokers are being used by many who cook at the competitive level. Their smokers use smoldering wood and low temperatures to help you create mouthwatering meats that are so tender you won’t need a knife.
Detached patios that are close to pools and other water features, and even lakes, are sometimes referred to as detached cabanas. The two structures are really no different except when you hear the word cabana you imagine the capabilities to be reminiscent of a luxury resort where the water is only a few feet away. Once completed, this structure will have the capabilities that would rival any 5-star resort.
Of course the structure will also have an area for the homeowners big screen HDTV right above the lovely stone fireplace as well and plenty of ceiling fans to stay cool on those warm Texas days. Since this structure is still in progress, we look forward to sharing the photos of the completed structure with you very soon. Until then imagine the things you could do with your very own detached patio, outdoor kitchen and outdoor fireplace and contact Archadeck of Austin to make it happen. (512) 259-8282
We always welcome the opportunity to be able to work hand in hand with a skilled architect. We welcome the opportunity to work with customers whose architect developed a plan for their outdoor living space. However, often, the homeowner will bring in the landscaping plan which was drawn up by their landscape architect and based on this Archadeck of Austin incorporates an outdoor living space to fit in with their landscaping. The dilemma with this is that it is best to design the outdoor structure first and then customize the landscaping to fit in with the structure’s style and dimensions as well as that of the existing home.
In the case of this homeowner, they came to us while they were still in process with another contractor that had left them frustrated because of the number of mistakes they were seeing. These homeowners brought their architect’s design to the table along with the confidence that we could turn this project into something they could be proud of.
When we received their architect’s design, we put it through our standards and structural warranty design process that Archadeck of Austin does with all it’s plans and also drew a set of plans that fit our criteria for loading and other structural aspects.
The structure Archadeck of Austin is building for these homeowners is a 1,000 square foot Tigerwood deck. It will have a roof over the dining area portion which is right off the homes master bedroom. The deck will also have a cooking area on the other end. There is a split level staircase. There will be a roof structure that will be over the dining area and a shade structure over the entire remainder of the deck. The shade structure is quite unique in that it uses a truss system of framing in order to maintain the size of the structure using minimal posts. The most unique feature of this deck is that when most people build a deck, you don’t want to see any framing that is visible, on this deck the details of the framing will be one of the main focal points of the structure. We are using large 8 x 8 beams, opposed to the usual 6 x 6 that are commonly used. The beams are made of Douglas Fir and all the framing is oversized to take on a personality of its own to accentuate the entire structure. The beams are kept from actually touching the ground by the addition of custom-made steel. The structure will use a bullwire railing system to maximize the view. The deck will have a beautiful non-obtrusive view of a canyon.
The homeowners’ desire is for an architectural look that also has the characteristics of age-old craftsmanship. In most cases a structure can either possess architectural quality or functional quality, this structure will have both. The beauty of the framing system in itself, alone is worth talking about. Great architecture like this feeds great living. When you have a home that is well designed and well-built by an experienced builder, you live well in it. Where there are focal details and striking architectural beauty, it makes you living experience even better. Adversely, the same is true. When you have a detail that you just aren’t happy with, these small elements can detract from your living experience. This is why it is so crucial to start with great architecture and design, it can make a world of difference in the way you think, feel and live day-to-day.

I cannot even imagine presenting a job to a prospective client without the immeasurable aid of our custom design renderings. Through a custom designed rendering we can add in your furniture pieces, additional seating areas and even your grill. A properly composed rendering will show details and nuances not seen in a conventional one-dimensional drawing. Details such as elevation changes, and the direction of the swing on the doors.
Presenting a three-dimensional design rendering to our client gives them an opportunity to see their design true to life. This true to life rendering also gives them the opportunity to make changes to areas and details they normally wouldn’t be aware of until after the structure was completed, this way we get a better idea of exactly what the customer themself envisions.Another postive detail is that all our renderings come with landscaping ideas to help the homeowner envision the truly finished project.
Archadeck of Austin prides itself on constructiing spaces large enough to fit your furniture and outdoor living lifestyle. Remember when you were ready to move into your “big” new house, and once all the furniture was in place the structure wasn’t so “big” anymore? We want the structure you get from us to be all that you imagined and everything it seems, meaning that we will make every effort to make certain your space has enough
“flow” and “harmony” once the furnishings are moved into the space. Showing the space through the design rendering will give you the opportunity to maybe make that covered porch a little larger to accommodate that large outdoor seating ensemble you have, or the to add more room for that prized gas grill and smoker.
In essence the difference between a written description of what you are getting and a rendering is that more happens when a professional rendering is drawn to include emphasis and demonstration in true to life examples of how the details will be taken care of. If you are considering adding an outdoor or indoor space to your life, give Archadeck of Austina call to get a realistic design rendering of your structure today.Call (512) 259-8282.
Outdoor Kitchen Additon by Archadeck of Austin Takes a Pergola to the Flip-Side, With Stunning Results
As you may already know the Texas state motto is “friendship”. Archadeck of Austin has created an outdoor living area that is all about friendship and entertaining. This unique structure boasts an outdoor kitchen and covered porch that is sure to draw this homeowner’s friends and family to their home like a magnet.
These detailings were added to an old home that had an existing patio that was very long and had very high ceilings, about 16’ to the ceiling. We decided to enclose two ends of the patio because of the high winds that are common in this area. We then built an outdoor kitchen at one end and elevated the rear bar section of the outdoor kitchen.
The outdoor kitchen has a full-size refrigerator, a built-in sink, gas grill, side burner, storage and pull-out drawers. We used standard exterior porcelain tile with a bullnose edge and added a unique backsplash to the kitchen area. We used a combination of stone and stucco in the structure to break up the amount of stonework on the house itself.
The most unique feature of this structure is the innovative use of the pergola which you see hanging from the ceiling. We used the pergola in a hanging manner to help lower the ceiling in this massively high structure to “cozy” it up and make it more conducive to feeling like a gathering spot and to also use it to hang lighting features from and add light to the space. We had to install the pergola so it would not swing in the wind. We attached it using large iron chains secured from the pergola to the ceiling joists, we also added cross members between the chains to solidify the structure to ensure no swinging. The chains not only do the tough job of expertly securing the pergola, they also add a rustic charm to the feature.
We then hung the pergola directly over the outdoor kitchen area. All the decorative elements were added to the pergola before we elevated it. The detailed light fixtures are actually made from the antlers of white-tailed deer, adding additional character to this already unique space, and a great element to use as a conversation piece!
This structure is big on Texas style. The homeowner’s selection of wood, and stone add nature inspired beauty to this structure , as well as all the detailing that adds rustic charm. This space will be truly memorable to all who have the opportunity to enjoy it. If you are considering the addition of a “uniquely you” outdoor living space , give Archadeck of Austin a call, we can plan and construct a structure for you that will be memorable for years to come.Call (512) 259-8282
What’s the difference between a cabana and a covered patio?
A cabana is a stand-alone structure that generally exists to support a pool or water area. It’s made to create an area for changing, an area for shelter, and an area for sun protection. Unlike a covered patio that is physically connected to the home, a cabana stands alone. But more so than this literal description, because the cabana sits apart from the home, it becomes its own physical space — like a tree house. Why do kids love tree houses? It’s certainly not because of their comfort or because of their ease of access. But, it’s because of their seclusion. A structure that stands away from your home is an oasis. It’s a place to have a break from your home – a place for a private romantic dinner or to slip off to in order to read a book in peace. This particular cabana we built is probably like no other.
When the homeowners and I first walked out back to start designing what the finished project would look like, they had this magical custom pool in their backyard complete with fountains and custom tile work. To the side of the pool area, they had poured concrete for the cabana structure that was going to be the next step in their dream back yard building.
The homeowners had a picture of what they were thinking of. But the first thing that was apparent to me was that the structure they were envisioning was just going to be too large for the size of the concrete they poured originally. This is something that’s so important. So many times owners will make their patios too small. At first blush, a 10×15 patio or 15×15 patio sounds plenty big enough. After all, many bedrooms or other rooms in our houses are that size. But, in those rooms, the furniture can sit against the wall and they are not designed to have traffic around the perimeter of the furniture. In an outdoor structure, the furniture is often in the middle of the patio. This is especially the case when the structure includes a table. Tables require a lot of room for walking around. We were able to add 2 feet on the outside length and width. This additional area was covered by the enclosed areas including the grill, bar, storage areas and fireplace.
The first thing I always do when I go on an initial design consultation is ask the homeowner what sort of structure they are envisioning and how they want to live outside. Sometimes I’m able to add insight from my experience such as the additional size recommendation I mentioned above. After doing this for 18 years, I’ve seen a lot of projects. I have a lot of dialogue with my owners after their project is completed and I use all of that information to help my new clients.
When I start designing the structure after hearing all their needs and wants, I always look to see what they already have. What is the architectural style of the home? What are the materials that are used on the house and in any other existing outdoor structures? Do they currently use stone, siding, brick? I try to incorporate those materials into the new structure. My goal is to make it look like the structure was either original to the home or the perfect complement to the home.
These homeowners had a brick home with an existing wood deck. Their pool had a stone decorative back and Cantera columns. So I pulled the Cantera columns into the new cabana and used cedar to tie the materials together.
We designed the outdoor fireplace into the corner for a couple of reasons. First, it would be the focal point of the room. But even more importantly we wanted some weather protection because the large flat-screen TV was to be built in above the fireplace. We had a cabinet builder build cypress cabinets immediately adjoining the fireplace as a place to house electronics equipment, the DVD player, the cable box, etc. As you can see, we stair-stepped the cabinets going with deeper cabinets closer to the fireplace and shallower cabinets as you got further away. The deeper cabinets were built to fit the electronics equipment. The stair stepping helped give depth and visual appeal.
Another thing we built into the design was a bar that was fully accessible from both sides.
For the roof, the owners wanted an especially decorative and especially heavy-duty roof. They were in a high hail zone so they wanted to make sure it was strong. They used a steel shingle that looked exactly like a clay shingle. it had a crushed stone application and was beautiful.
Another thing that’s very important when building any outdoor structure is to make sure it’s completely wired for electrical. A fan makes perfect sense in any outdoor structure here in Texas. You will also want lighting and likely outlets to plug in peripherals, appliances, etc.
I went back to visit the homeowners recently. I asked them how they liked their cabana. They said they like it so much that they often sleep out there. Their young girls will have their slumber parties outside and they will all go out to the cabana for family movie night. It truly is an oasis for their family.
